Can a Project be unlinked from a Program effectively meaning that it is no longer included in the Pr

We have several projects that were grouped together as a program.  As the individual projects grew in size, then so did the program - to the point where it no longer opened.

The projects were then unlinked from the program, but, although on screen they're not there, when the update or refresh performance programmes run, they are still linked "invisibly".

Can projects be unlinked successfully from a program and if so, how is it done?
