11i to r12 upgrade-period closure

 Hi
Its more generic question on Period closure.

We are doing an Upgrade from 11i to R12.1.3.Im not an finance person but this question is for more R12 general awareness

Whats the best  business practice on period closure ie whether all periods should be closed in 11i  and new periods to be open in R12  and start fresh transactions?
Assume we have some practical  business difficulties and wanted to move with open transactions and close in R12 environment,is it okay?

Could you please provide the pros and cons of the above options please?
