Location selection with warehouse management using volume method from the item UOM profile

if the volume method is used as a seection criteria , is the total volume of the location considered or is the available volume considered?  I want to firstly check if there is stock of the item to be put away in the location then check if there is enpough space left for the volume I am putting away.  We are using double deep racking
