Merchant Flag vs Customer Flag

When my colleagues create an instance using the html screen, the Merchant flag is checked.  When I do it, the Customer flag is checked.  So, somehow it thinks either I'm a customer, or I'm not an employee.  What do I check to determine how this flag is set?
