Can I use 11.1.2.x or 11.1.1.6 Dev Suite (Forms Builder) against a 11.1.1.4 Middle Tier?

Hi There
We are running a pile of Oracle Mid tier servers running 11.1.1.4 Mid Tier with forms and reports.

We are having desktop issues with 11.1.1.4 IDS on Windows 7 x64 (no support).

Can I upgrade the desktop tools (IDS) to 11.1.1.6 or 11.1.2.x and deploy/use against the 11.1.1.4 Mid tier?

Any caveats to this?

Oracle support just says "it's not a good idea" without any document references or Solid support information.

 I'd like some facts!
