Email alerts for upcoming Activities

 We are new to CRM OD (July 2012) and need to be able to send an email to an Activity or Opportunity owner when an activity due date is approaching. Ideally we would send the activity and due date to Outlook and let Outlook handle the alert but it seems the capability to do that was in PIM Synch which is no longer available.
Any thoughts or ideas on how to make this happen.
