12C 2-System Upgrade (incorporating database upgrade using transportable tablespaces)

As part of the 2-system upgrade, a backup of the pre-12c database must be taken, with time noted, and restored/recovered on the 12C server. 

Our clients want to include an upgrade from 11.1.0.7 to 11.2.0.3 in this repository copy to the target server.  I'm thinking this can be accomplished with expdp/impdp or transportable tablespaces. 

I know the 2-system upgrade has a good deal of complexity on its own, but has anyone ever upgraded the repository during this phase of the 12c upgrade?  If so, can you please provide links and/or references that detail the procedure? 

Both systems are Linux x86_64.  Source is RH4, destination will be RH5.
