purge/deletetion of configuration items and its effects

My system has a very high number of configurations. Our configuration process runs quite slowly and is close to getting dangerously behind each day we have a larger number of lines created.

Currently this table has 20,782,859 rows SELECT Count (*) FROM bom_ato_configurations;

We have discontinued some our of models and will not be using them again, so i would like to remove all of those.

I would also like to purge the active boms that have not been used for quite a while.

We do have hte system option set to re-use a configuration if one already exists.

I would like to know if anyone has any experience with what i am pursuing, if what i want to do is possible or even effective and what sorts of issues this can (or will) cause.
