API or Extension to Customize "Document Numbering" Generation

We are using Oracle EBS R12.1.3.  We have Purchasing and iProcurement (along with other financial modules).  We have “Document Numbering” set to Automatic.  I want to change the document number that is generated by the system.  Is there an API or an extension that I can use to generate different numbers under different situations?
