Patching the miniroot doubt

Hello,
Can you, please, let me know why Patching the Miniroot Image (Example) includes extra steps (rc2, sulogin, svccfg) not present in How To Patch the Miniroot Image?
Which one should I follow if all that I want is to be able to successfully flash install a fully updated archive? (not having issues with a ZFS-root installation)
