Recommended upgrade path for External Applications Tier - 11i to R12

 We are currently in the process of upgrade EBS from 11i to R12.1.3. We have an external apps tier with Reverse proxy configuration. What is the recommended (Or simplest) method to upgrade external tier with this setup?
