Cannot copy data between domains because of buffer positions

I am trying to copy data from one domain to another. However, mapData and updateArray do not work with buffer positions. As a result, much of the data does not get copied to the "new" domain. Does anyone know how to update the domain so that those buffer positions are "actual" positions? i.e $BUF$DEPT$00FC4 becomes DEPT100??
I thought maybe reshapeArrays or positionBufferMgr -rebuffer would work, but they do not.
