PAY: Payroll Purge

I'd like some input on the Payroll Purge process. My company has never run a payroll purge and we are looking to purge to improve performance.

Is there a standard as to how often the purge is run? How many years of data do most companies keep? Which tables are you purging/keeping?

Also, any documents on My Oracle Support giving purge information would be great. The following

seems to be the most inclusive document I've found, but was last updated in 2001.
