Does recovery catalog need to take rman backup on Standby server?

 Hi,
Would you please confirm me if we can take a rman backup on Standby Server with control file ?.  As per oracle documentation recovery catalog is a mandatory to take a rman backup on standby servers. However I have found some information in the google that recovery catalog is not mandatory to take a rman backup on standby server and one of my friend also told me that he is taking backups on standby database without recovery catalog.  

your confirmation on this one  is very much appreciated.
