Change Role Name

How do you change a role name?  I thought it was straightforward -- edit role name via Step 1 in Role Management and just replacing old role name, but this created an issue.  It stopped a user under the new role name from creating account record (dynamic layout).  I tried creating temp role to 'house' users then move them to newly renamed role but that did not work.  I tried copying the old role name and renaming it then assigning users that new role name but that did not work either.   Thanks for any help.
