BIP desktop 11.1.1.5/11.1.1.6 not displaying local-name()

Hi,
I have been designing an rtf template in Word 2010 using BIP desktop 11.1.1.5. 

After embedding just a simple xml in the template body

<?local-name(.)?>

The PDF preview is not returning the value of local-name(.).  This function is returning the correct XML tag when I use BIP desktop 10.1.3.4.1.

Is there a workaround or fix to this issue?
