Dataguard and RMAN backups using controlfiles

Can someone tell me if the following will not work for me? It appears from various Oracle RMAN and Dataguard documents that RMAN backups of the primary and standby database MUST use a recovery catalog and cannot use control files. I prefer to use control files if they would work. Could someone please tell me if they simply will not work?

Prior to setting up dataguard I was using RMAN scripts to do weekly full and daily incremental backups using a controlfile. This worked great. Since the backups are cataloged in the controlfile I just had to make sure my control file was backed up and I could sleep better at night.
