What is a star item in a BOM and in OM context and how is it created and what is its significance?

Hi,i hope this is the right forum for my question, if its not ,please suggest the right forum. 

What is a star item in a BOM and in OM context and how is it created and what is its significance?
I keep hearing about the star item in a bom and OM context. I just wanted to know how is a star item created or tagged by Order management or whatever and what is its significance for other orgs etc.
I looked at the BOM and OM  user guide and there is no reference to star item in those guides.
