Upgrading to 9.?

We are currently trying to plan an upgrade.  We are still on IBM operating system V5R4.  We have an issue upgrading to V6 or V7.  Our form overlay software will not work on a newer release of IBM operating system without renewing or maintenance on our form overlay software.   If I upgrade to JD Edwards 9.2 can I stay on V5R4 until I can get BI up and running to replace my form overlay issue and then upgrade IBM operating system before sunset date?
