Closing Asset Periods

We've just configure assets with first date in service of 01-01-1900 and have a matching calanedar that dates to that period.  Is there a safe technical way to close periods to Oct-2012 since there will be no transaction prior to the period.  Manually closing 1300 periods is really not a viable option
