After Clause Import (from Word 2003 XML) no ability to add variables

·        When performing a clause import, after the import completes, I do not have the option to add variables.  The variables section of the clause remain available to view/search,  but unable to select.  Conversely, if I add the applicable variables to the clause (as selectable once the import completes) prior to doing the import – when it comes time for import, the import completes without errors/warning, however the body of the clause is blank (basically the import didn’t work). 

Any ideas?
