Automatic Alpha/numeric Clause Numbering

Clause Numbering:  there are two options: Automatic (Numeric – sequentially increasing) and Manual (Alpha-Numeric).    Our client has a requirement to have alpha-numeric numbering, but want automatic numbering.  Haven’t found a good way to accommodate this, but looking.  Any Ideas?
