Item features

I was wondering how the item features can be used. e.g. based on the category of an item we need to call out a set of cat codes e.g. if the item is jewelry we need to show carat, shape etc

if the item is painting we need to show artist etc. Is there a way to automatically populate item features based on the type of item. Wondering if someone has used it successfully
