what are the best practices to reduce DIRECT PATH READ?

Hi Experts,

    Recently we changed the DB parameters filesystemio_options - setall   and  dbwr_io_slaves  -12 .

  DB-10.2.0.5
  APPS:11.5.10.2
  RAM- 32gb
  SGA-8gb
  PGA-6gb

  Previously one concurent program was completed in 2hrs. But after this change it is taking 3hrs to complete.

  From AWR report i found DIRECT PATH READ as the top event.
 
  what is DIRECT PATH READ?
 
what are the best practices to reduce the same?

please help.
