What is Alternate Ledgers in Fixed Assets

Hi All,
I would like to know what is the alternate ledger setup in fixed assets (Under book control > Ledgers). I downloaded the white paper as ID 1303067.1 . However, the paper the too long and I have no enough background knowledge to understand it. Can you any one brief my what is the purpose/function for alternate ledger in a simple way?
