Em12C performance

 We've been using EM12c for a bit now and is it me or is its performance actually pretty poor?  Sometimes pages take ages to load and looking at the server its either doing nothing or running java processes flat out. Sometimes it just hangs on a page load and you can't get it to do anything and restarting it is a mess - emctlt stop oms claims its shut things down but it leaves multiple processes running, and starting up can take over 10 minutes. The server has 8GB of RAM and has 2 6 core CPUs running at 2.6GHz.
This is a clean install of the latest version onto a Red Hat linux server.
