Filtering Custom Objects lists in Related Information section

We have used Custom Object 1.  Lets call it Contract.  We allow for one Contract to be related to another.  Within the Contract the Contract related information tab is displayed.  It shows two buttons allowing for New and Add.  When clicking Add is there a way to filter this list?  Seems like for a custom object it doesn't present all the lists you have for the object like it does for out of the box objects.  For out of the box objects next to the Book it would have the lists drop down?
