What are the advantages / Benifits of Period Close Process?

Hi,
I would like to know,  What are the advantages / benefits of Period Close Process for Receivable  and Oracle Assets.

As i know few advantages given below.

1. Increasing Operational Efficiency.
2. Ensure Data Consistency.

Please let me know, if any other advantages / Benefits.
