TDE ORA 28331

We are on Oracle 11.2.0.2 and wish to use TDE.  Some of our columns are Varchar2(4000) so we are getting the ORA-28331 error.  Is there a workaround for this besides reducing the size of the column or going to Tablespace endcryption?
