Serial Tag set up to track products in Install Base

Hello, 

I understand Service TAG  feature allows the product to be tracked in the install base even if it is not serial number enabled.
If we allow the serial number to be entered only at the time of shipment  and have the product tracked in Install Base, it
will save lot of time in the manufacturing process (we are on 11.5.10).

Would appreciate  if you can point me to  any documentation that can explain in details about this Service Tag feature.
