Confirm Purchasing Contracts do not need to use Releases

Hi - I would just like to confirm that Purchasing Contracts do not need to use the Releases functionality. We would like to use the Alerts and Thresholds available on Purchasing Contracts - but generate the Purchase Orders independently (i.e. from Requisition to Purchase Order). In testing, associating the Purchase Order with the Purchasing Contract it appears to work fine. But would like to know if there are any repercussions in not using the Release functionality. Thanks,
