Ledgers and multiple currency - suggestions please!

Hi All,

 I have a basic question about when and how to decide whether you need a separate ledger or not?

Basically, we have operations in US and that is one ledger in USD with a single Legal entity - US GAAP. If we expand operations in Canada, how should we approach this?

Can we have 2 different Legal entities attached to the same ledger with different taxation rules?  Can the currencies be different under a single ledger with multiple LEs?

or should we always go for a separate ledger becuase the currency is different and we wish to do subledger transactions/Journals in that currency?
