Proper handling of .docx files

One of my users is trying to manipulate a Microsoft Office .docx file. The file browser claims that it is a .zip file and tries to extract it. I have tried setting the user's File Association for .docx files to point to the OpenOffice executable, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. If I try using "Open with" and trying to add the .docx filetype with OpenOffice, then if I try to handle a real .zip file, it will invoke OpenOffice. Does anyone know what needs to get poked for this to work? Also, can this be set system-wide
