Workflow against "Contact Role"

Is it possible to trigger a workflow based on "Contact Role" from Customer Contact?  I would like to trigger a WF when a Contact Role is changed but this field is not part of the Customer object or Contact object. 
There is an option to trigger a WF based on a record type of "Account Contact Role", for the "Contact Roles" filed, but this is not the same field as "Contact Role" (Contact Role is a multi select picklist and is managed via the related information from either the Customer or Contact object - Contact Roles is a long text field that is OOB and I am unable to edit).  Both are visible from Customer Contact field set- up.
