Ledger Sets vs Consolidation

Hi,
I wanted to know the pros and cons of using the Ledger sets versus GL Consolidation. Firstly can one be used to replace the functionality of others or they both have different functionalities.
I heard that Ledger sets do provide some advantages like in period closing ,reporting etc. 
Please share your ideas for an interesting discussion.
