Closing Cases without using Solutions

We currently use solutions to close/resolve cases. Some groups use solutions as a knowledge base while others use solutions more as resolution codes.

I am curious if it is possible to close cases without using solutions at all or to bypass the requirement to have a successful solution to close a case?
