Third-party housing of credit card data and tokenization in FSCM 8.9

an FSCM 8.9 be configured/modified to support third-party housing of credit card data? We are performing an impact analysis of the feasibility of using a third-party storage solution and tokenizing the credit card field in FSCM 8.9. I understand this is delivered functionality in the upcoming 9.2 release but we are looking at the impact/effort both in process and customization of moving towards this prior to the next upgrade.  Additionally, would be interested in learning about/talking to other customers who have done this on FSCM 8.9.
