How does index compression work in db 11gr2?

In 11g, there is an option for table compression "compress for oltp".For index compression, this option is not available. 
How does index compression work?
Is it useful to compress index to gain performance in queries? Are there disadvantages in compressing index? What are the common trade-offs of compression/no compression of indexes?
