How to change item attribute under status control - APP-INV-05623 Error

I have a new item template that has customer ordered set as N. This attribute Customer ordered is under status control at org level and status setting is sets value. When I applied this new item template to an item that has customer ordered attribute as Y, I got the error "APP-INV-05623 This attribute is not updatable because it is under status control". It seems the only solution here is to change the status setting to default value for customer ordered attribute. However, the change may affect other items. Is there any other way to apply this new item template to
