Dash board prompts

I have a simple summary report that I want to show the number of open customer visits to active customers.  I have set the calendar year to the CURRENT_YEAR but want to use a prompt for the month.    I have the calendar month filtered as prompted on the report and have the dashboard prompt created.  Changing the prompt on the dashboard is not changing the data within the report. 

I'm still fairly new at this so any help you can provide would be great.
