Lot Numbers on inventory records

if an organization is not lot control  can we still use lot_numbers?

Our users do not want lot control for our warehouses because of cycle counting would require the count by lot and that type of control is not desirable but

we still need the ability to trace inventory that is shipped back to its orgination for reporting issues and for customer complaints

can we create lot numbers and store them on the onhand inventory records?--currently we create lot numbers from our ASNs loading into the wms_lpn_content_interface and rcv_transactions_interfaces
