Invalid User when using "actions" but works in edit mode?

We have a user that has left the company and a new user will handle the recons.  Provisioned the new user in shared services and able to see them in the list of users.  In the profile list, filtered on the old user and tried to use the actions area to update the profiles with the new user information but getting an error "Invalid User" however can go into a recon and set the preparer correctly.
