What is the escape character for prompt?

I have the following script.

create synonym &&1.WIP_OPERATIONS for WIP.WIP_OPERATIONS

When I enter the username at prompt, it took it as

create synonym xxcascoWIP_OPERATION_RESOURCES for WIP.WIP_OPERATION_RESOURCES

Obviously, I think I need to use some kind of escape character for the period to show up. I just don't know which one. Goes any one ever run into this issue before? Please advise. Thank you very much.
