SDK - should attribute name or api name be used?

Hi,

Should attribute name or api name be used in coding and what are the pro and cons of using either method. Also I see that the api name is editable so if you use api name in code it will break if api name is  changed. Is there any way of making the api name non editable. What precautions should you use while using api name. If the api name is multilist01 is it advisable to change the api name. What are best practices?
