Patch/Upgrade RPAS server and domain

When we patch/upgrade RPAS server and domain we have two options. One is to use rsp_manager with -domain option to patch/upgrade both server and domain. The second option is to use rsp_manager with -no_domain first then use convertDomain and upgradeDomain utility. The first option is simple and easier. Can I only use option one to patch/upgrade domain if I don't have to use -xmlHierFile option to convert hierarchy.xml? What is the main difference to patch/upgrade RPAS server and domain? Thanks.
