[INS-30043] The grid infrastructure home does not exist or is empty

I am installing Oracle Grid Infrastructure on the server and I am getting the following error:

[INS-30043] The grid infrastructure home '/u10/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid' does not exist or is empty

I am actually installing Oracle Software on the server and it was recommended that I should install Grid Infrastructure first. I have previously attempted installin Oracle software in  '/u10/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3' previously but have gotten an identical error "The grid infrastructure home '/u10/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid' does not exist or is empty"

My $ORACLE_BASE is '/u10/app/oracle' and $ORACLE_HOME is '/u10/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3'
