Purge temporary XLA tables

Is there any documentation that explains the "Purge Temporary Journal Import Tables Created by Subledger Accounting" concurrent job?  We upgraded to 12.1.3 almost a year ago and just noticed that there are hundreds of XLA_GLT_nnnnnn tables that have been created.  Apparently, a new table is created for every journal entry.  Are we supposed to be running this Purge process periodically?
