Using Does Not Contain, Start with or Equal to Search Operators

Hello

Whenever I use Search Operators "Does not Contain, "Does not Start with" or "Not Equal to" in a custom searches, I always get Search results that include the value that I am trying to eliminate from the results. Can anyone advise on how to use these operators correctly so that you actually get results that dont include the value.
