database instance vs. oc4j instance

What is the difference between an EBS database instance and oc4j instance? I understand that the database instance is located in db tier and oc4j in apps tier. Say use vision for example, the database instance name is VIS. Is the oc4j instance name also VIS? Please advise. Thanks.
