RMAN usage of the word Target

This is just a curious question.  Why does Oracle RMAN use the word Target for the Source database in cloning?  Where did this evolve from?  Everything else I work with there is a source and a target but with RMAN there is no object called the source and the source is called the target.  So I am just wondering how this came about.
